Theses

Bachelor projects on the topic of emotional development will commence in September 2009 or January 2010. Register via U-twist.

Lizet Ketelaar is running a project on the social-emotional development of 1- to 5-year old autistic, deaf (with cochlear implant) and typically developing children. Children are emotional beings from birth on. However, being able to respond adaptively to the social environment requires a sound social-emotional development. Deaf children and children with an ASD can't profit from social cues the way that typically developing children can. This may affect different areas of social-emotional development such as empathy, Theory of Mind or emotion recognition. A test battery to assess social-emotional functioning has been developed and the first data has been collected. Students will closely examine and analyze these data. E.g., categorizing verbal responses on ToM tasks, analyzing mental state talk.

Maartje Kouwenberg's project focuses on the social-emotional development of 9-14 year old deaf and typically developing children. Emotions play an important role in our daily lives. However, hearing-impaired children, who have less access to the social world, seem to experience difficulties in their social-emotional development more often than typically developing children. Several questionnaires have been developed to examine the various aspects of children's emotional functioning. Students will administer questionnaires to typically developing children and compare these data to data already collected among hearing-impaired children. Students fluent in sign language may be asked to administer questionnaires to deaf children.

Lucinda Pouw's project concerns the development of a battery of tests to measure the development of social-emotional skills in 9- to 14-year-old children with an ASD and typically developing children. Students will research the applicability of newly developed and adapted questionnaires by administering these to typically developing children. A questionnaire on autistiform traits will enable students to research its relationship with for example anxiety, aggression or  emotion regulation.

Master students are invited to visit Blackboard for current openings to write their Master thesis.
