Adva is currently looking for participants for her research, which focuses on enhancing the social participation of deaf and hard-of-hearing children. Children in groep 7 or 8 in Dutch mainstream schools, who are deaf or hard-of-hearing, are invited to participate. Evelien Dirks successfully defended her PhD research

On October 31st, Evelien Dirks defended her research on social and emotional functioning in very young children with moderate hearing loss and was granted a well-deserved doctorate. Evelien faced some challenging questions, for example addressing the implications of this important and pioneering work for treatment, but she could easily and convincingly bridge this gap between scientific research and clinical practice in her responses. Congratulations Dr. Dirks, and we now welcome you as an alumnus of the Focus on Emotions lab!

Sharing experiences with Chinese rehabilitation center

On 20 September, Prof. Johan Frijns (Department of Otorhinolaryngology, LUMC) and Yung-Ting visited CRRCHSI, the state-level rehabilitation center for hearing and speech impairment headquartered in Beijing, China. The tour in the center, led by the deputy directors Dr. Wei Liang and Dr. Liyan Wang, showed how children who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) are actively supported and cared.

During the afternoon lecture (see poster shown on the rightmost above; click to enlarge), Johan shared with the audience the intervention procedures and rehabilitation programs administered at the LUMC, while Yung-Ting talked about her eye-tracking project on DHH children and the data collection in Taiwan.

Maladaptive emotion regulation strategies linked to depression in children with a Developmental Language Disorder: Paper in press

Neeltje’s research has shown that the use of adaptive emotion regulation (ER) strategies results in less depressive symptoms for children with a Developmental Language Disorder (DLD), in the same way as it does for children without a DLD. In parallel, using maladaptive ER strategies leads to an increase in depressive symptoms for both groups.

Who are we?

Our team is located at the department of Developmental Psychology of Leiden University in the Netherlands. We work in close collaboration with the Dutch Foundation for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Child (NSDSK), the ENT department of the Leiden University Medical Centre (LUMC), and the Centre for Autism.Our group is dedicated to examining the emotional development of children and adolescents of all walks of life. We have a strong focus on the functionality of emotions, and its impact on children's social development. Besides typically developing children and adolescents, we are interested in the development of those with hearing impairments, with autism spectrum disorders, or with specific language impairments.
