October 18th is the International Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) Awareness Day. Approximately 5-7% of the children experience severe problems acquiring and using their first language. However, these problems are often not recognized and understood. DLD affects schooling, socio-emotional development, self-esteem, and behaviors of children. With suitable support, these children are able to overcome many of these obstacles. Neeltje van den Bedem did her PhD project on social-emotional development of children and youngsters with DLD. On September 18th, Bobbie van Zessen graduated cum laude for her master in Developmental Psychology. She worked with Adva on the inclusion of Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing children in mainstream education. Congratulations, Bobbie!

August 30 to September 1, Adva, Boya, and Yung-Ting visited Athens, Greece, to attend the 19th European Conference on Developmental Psychology. In different symposia and paper sessions, they presented their latest research findings about children or adolescents with a hearing loss, or who have a Developmental Language Disorder. Yung-Ting presented her unique studies on children with a cochlear implant from Taiwan. Discussions focused on the fact that social participation does not come naturally when communication forms a barrier, and what impact it can have on other areas of development as well as the possible ways to cope with it.
